Synopsis:
This shimmering debut from writer-director John Shank tells the story of a young farmer in rural Belgium who is desperately trying to hold on to his traditional way of life, a task made almost impossible by modernisation and market pressures. Beautifully contemplative, Last Winter is a timeless piece of cinema and also thoroughly topical, with its themes of economic hardship, the separation of modern man from nature and the desire to return to a more authentic world. Featuring deeply felt landscape photography, the film suggests shades of Terence Malick in its stark but sumptuous vision.
